A Brief History of Volvo

Volvo is a Swedish car manufacturer founded in 1927 by Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larsson. The automobile production division of the company had one main goal; producing the safest vehicles possible.

In 1927, Volvo introduced the PV4, which was designed to withstand the Swedish terrain and climate better than American import cars. By the 1930’s, Volvo realized the need for a car “for the people,” and so in 1936 it introduced the PV51, which was smaller and more affordable than its predecessors. Sweden’s neutrality in WWII allowed Volvo to continue production, but it was severely hampered. Volvo designed the PV444 and after WWII it was able to gain a strong foothold in the U.S. market. The PV544 was the replacement model for the PV444, and was also hugely successful.

Volvo has maintained a standard of safety and excellence with all of its vehicles. For example, in 1958 Volvo designed the three-point safety belt, one of the most important safety features invented for vehicles. Volvo continues to perform well in almost every world market, and continues to rapidly expand business.
