A Brief History of Volkswagen
Volkswagen was founded in Germany in 1937 with the goal of producing a car “for the people” that was affordable and small yet could still transport a family.
Using Ferdinand Porsche’s design, Hitler ordered that an affordable car be made so that Germans could enjoy the same access to cars that Americans did at the time. WWII would put a stop to that, and soon VW was producing vehicles for the German military. The Allies took control of the VW factory in 1945, and a British general decided to use it to produce Type I’s, or Beetles, for the British army. Slowly but surely the VW Beetle gained fame and popularity in the late 40’s and 50’s. In 1972, VW hit the 15 million mark for Beetles produced. In 1974 VW rolled out the Golf, which has become one of the most popular cars in the world.
VW spends a huge amount of money on research and development, which is why it is at the forefront of safety and CO2 emissions innovation, and also why it is the third largest automaker in the world.
