A Brief History of Pontiac

Pontiac is named after the town of Pontiac, Michigan. The company was first founded in 1893 by Edward M. Murphy to produce horse-drawn carriages. In 1909, after Murphy’s death, GM purchased Pontiac.

The first Pontiac vehicle was rolled out in 1926, the Five Passenger Coach. Pontiac continued to grow and achieve success through the 1920’s and 30’s. Pontiac maintained that success immediately after WWII, but by the mid 50’s Pontiac was falling behind its competitors. Pontiac experienced a revival during the 1960’s and the “performance era” of vehicles. In 1964, Pontiac unveiled the mid-sized Tempest, which set the stage for Pontiac’s success in the 60’s. That same year, Pontiac also introduced the GTO, one of the most legendary performance cars ever produced.

As the oil crisis hit America in the 1970’s, buyers turned away from gas-guzzling muscle cars and started looking for more economical alternatives. In 2008, after years of dropping sales and popularity, GM announced that it was phasing out Pontiac. In 2010, the last Pontiac ever produced rolled off the assembly line.
