A Brief History of Lexus
Lexus is the luxury brand division of Toyota, which was first introduced in the U.S. in 1989. They are currently Japan’s leading luxury automaker.
Lexus actually began as a project for a new vehicle design, which was called Flagship-1 by Toyota executives. It was a plan to build a vehicle that would compete with American luxury brands. The Flagship-1 project eventually resulted in the Lexus LS400, which was a smash hit in America. The Lexus looked nothing like Toyota vehicles, so it was very successful in creating a unique luxury brand reputation for itself. The LS400 was introduced in 1989, and was the top selling luxury car in America for several years after its release. While the LS400 was highly rated in handling and performance, it was also much cheaper than the Mercedes or BMW alternatives at the time.
Lexus has maintained this track record for success, and has expanded into other markets such as Asia and Australia. They are currently developing hybrid models and fuel efficient vehicles for the next generation of Lexus vehicles.
