A Brief History of Hyundai
Hyundai was founded in 1967 in South Korea by Chung Ju-Yung, a man who was born into a poor family of farmers. Chung Ju-Yung was able to raise enough capital with his successful construction business to found Hyundai.
In 1968, Hyundai teamed up with Ford to produce its first automobile, the Cortina. Shortly after the Cortina was designed, Hyundai teamed up with Mitsubishi to design the Pony. The Pony was the first Hyundai model to be shipped overseas in 1975. However, Hyundai didn’t enter into the U.S. automobile market until 1986, when it introduced the Excel. The Excel was very popular in America due to its low price.
Hyundai’s reputation in America suffered during the late 1980’s and the early 1990’s, but it was quickly restored when Hyundai offered 10-year warranties on all of its vehicles sold in the U.S. Now Hyundai is one of the top 10 car manufacturers in the world, and is selling vehicles in 193 countries worldwide.
