A Brief History of GMC

GMC is a subsidiary of GM, and it produces trucks, vans and SUVs. It is the second largest North American subsidiary of GM, behind Chevy. It was founded by William C. Durant in 1908.

GMC started out by producing some of the very first commercial trucks, and ever since then has garnered a reputation for producing high quality, durable trucks. During WWII, GMC produced more than 600,000 trucks for the U.S. military. After WWII, GMC bought out the company, Yellow Coach and began building buses all the way until the 1980’s, when they shut it down due to competition. GMC also was known for producing fire trucks, heavy-duty trucks, ambulances and motorhomes.

Nowadays GMC focuses on producing medium and light-duty trucks, such as the Sierra and Yukon, vans and SUVs. GMC vehicles bear a striking resemblance to its sister company’s vehicles, Chevrolets. GMCs are the high-end trucks compared to Chevys, and usually come with more options and standard features. GMC trucks are popular in Canada, while Chevys remain the number one choice for trucks in the U.S. market.
