A Brief History of Chevrolet
Chevy was founded in 1911 by Louis Chevrolet and William C. Durant, who founded General Motors. Shortly after this, Chevy was incorporated into General Motors.
Chevrolet started production with the Model D in 1918, built mainly to compete with the Model T. Just a few years after this, Chevy introduced the Suburban Carryall, which had seating for eight, had off-road capabilities, and was the predecessor for the SUV. In 1953, Chevy rolled out the Corvette, a two-seater sports car that has become a legendary automobile. By the early 1960’s, Chevy controlled about 10% of the U.S. vehicle market.
Chevrolet stopped producing such a wide variety of models in the years after the glory days of the 1960’s, and was hit hard by the economic downturn in the 2000’s. The company began designing fuel-efficient cars and trucks in order to turn things around, and in 2010 the Chevy Volt came out, an electric car that was named the 2012 North American car of the year.
