A Brief History of Buick
Buick was founded in 1899 as an independent internal combustion engine and vehicle manufacturer. In 1903, the company was purchased by James H. Whiting who moved the company to Flint, Michigan. It is also the luxury subsidiary of General Motors.
The first Buick that was put up for sale was the Model B, but only 37 units were produced. Pretty soon Buick was the top car maker in the U.S. In 1939, Buick produced the first vehicle with turn signals and also the first steering wheel mounted shift levers. WWII would slow the production of commercial vehicles, but after the war Buick hit the ground running.
1953 marked Buick’s 50th anniversary, and the company rolled out the Buick Roadmaster Skylark with a V8 engine, which was the most luxurious car available at the time, and has since become somewhat of a legendary automobile. In 1984, Buick’s U.S. sales peaked, and the company started expanding into new markets.
Buick now focuses on making luxury model vehicles, and Buick has experienced unparalleled success in China, where it now sells way more of its vehicles than in the U.S.
