A Brief History of Saab

Saab was originally founded in Sweden in 1937 to produce military aircraft. After WWII, the demand for aircraft disappeared, so the company started to look into new markets.

In 1945, Saab began working on a vehicle design project, which the company called “Project 92.” By 1949, Saab introduced the production model, the Saab 92. Throughout the 50’s Saab would upgrade and add on to the Saab 92. In the 1960’s, Saab’s popularity exploded with the introduction of the Saab 96, which was the first Saab vehicle exported out of Sweden. In 1968 the company introduced the Saab 99, which was the first Saab car to break all ties with the Saab 92. The 99 was extremely popular and achieved worldwide success. In 1978 Saab started producing the Saab 900, which was the 99’s replacement. The 900 proved to be Saab’s most successful model, selling over one million units.

GM bought the rights to Saab in 2000, and the auto industry took a big hit. In 2011 Saab was forced to file for bankruptcy, and it is still not known if the Saab brand will ever be resurrected.
