A Brief History of Lincoln
Lincoln was founded by Henry Leland in 1917 as an independent luxury automaker, and is in fact named after Abraham Lincoln, who was Leland’s hero. Leland was forced to sell Lincoln to Ford in 1922.
In 1939, Lincoln introduced arguably its most popular vehicle ever, the Continental, which went on to become one of the most iconic, classic luxury cars. The Continental would be upgraded and enhanced over the years, and would remain a popular luxury vehicle for years after its introduction.
During the 1980’s and 90’s, Lincoln was still producing luxury vehicles, such as the popular Town Car and Navigator. By 1998, Lincoln was the best-selling luxury car brand in the U.S. However, after 1998 Lincoln’s sales took a major hit as American buyers began turning to Asian imports in increasing numbers. Lincoln is still in the process of recovering, and is still owned by Ford. The company is reinventing itself, and plans on rolling out new vehicle models that it hopes will be able to compete with foreign luxury automakers.
