A broken muffler or a dysfunctional exhaust system can be an annoying and potentially costly problem to have with your vehicle. Rust is a common problem with exhaust systems, and can cause it to break down much faster than usual. Without a functioning muffler, your car will be very loud and obnoxious. Even a small hole in your muffler can make your car a whole lot noisier, and it will only get louder as the hole gets larger. The sound is the least of your problems, however. A leak or hole in your muffler can result in carbon monoxide and other exhaust gases seeping directly into the passenger compartment of your vehicle. Carbon monoxide can be deadly, even in small amounts, and is odorless and virtually undetectable. If carbon monoxide is leaking into your passenger compartment, you will most likely notice the symptoms first, such as dizziness, drowsiness and headaches. These exhaust gases can also bypass the catalytic converter, which converts harmful exhaust fumes into water vapor and carbon dioxide, through a hole or crack and escape into the atmosphere.

Catalytic convertors are required on all vehicles built after 1975. If your catalytic convertor is broken or damaged, you may not be legally allowed to drive your vehicle anymore.
